One of the key tasks of a healthy New Testament church is training new leaders. When most people think about training leaders, they think of helping them load up and go off to Bible college or seminary somewhere. But, the New Testament model of Paul and Timothy is quite different. Paul trained Timothy in the context of ministry—as they planted churches. As they preached and taught and served, Paul mentored Timothy and Timothy got much more than head knowledge. He got all the necessary doctrinal training as he acquired all the necessary ministry skills and character development.
City Church Lawrence is partnering with BILD International Ministries’ Antioch School of Church Planting and Leadership Development because we believe Paul’s method is not just a good option—it’s the best option. The Antioch School is church-based theological education that provides accredited academic credentials for ministry. In other words, you can earn an accredited degree while you serve in and through the ministry of City Church Lawrence (or your own local church).
This is a win-win for everyone: Students get an excellent education and accredited degree (for a fraction of the cost, by the way), and the local church gets to keep them right here. We serve them and they serve us.
But, the Antioch School isn’t just for those wanting to earn a ministry degree. It’s for all our members. Each Thursday night, we come together for deep and challenging discussions and every class we offer is available to every member of CCL (or non-members) without charge. Whether you want to pursue a formal degree or not, you are invited and encouraged to participate.
We don’t want to be a seminary, but we do want to follow the Biblical instruction of 2 Timothy 2:2: “The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.”
